After a few days of exploring and shopping, Jim & I were ready to take it easy today. We ordered room service and took our time getting dressed.
Fun fact: Italians don't eat big breakfasts. They order HUGE lunches (usually as their first meal around noon) then eat supper late (8-9pm).
Our main destination today was Castel Sant'Angelo (Castle of the Holy Angel). It did not disappoint! To get there, you had to cross the Tiber River on the Bridge of Angels.
You can barely see them in these photos but the bridge is lined with brilliant statues of angels.
Angel with the Lance .....
Angel with the Cross ......
Angel with the Nails .......
Side note: The angel above made me thing of Tracey because it looks like he's making the "I love you" sign. :)
Castel Sant-Angelo was initially built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family. It was also used as a medieval fortress in times of attack.
Legend has it that the Archangel Michael appeared with his sword on top of the mausoleum signaling the end of the Bubonic Plague in the 500's. That's how the castle got its name. You can see the statue of the archangel at the very top of the building below.
Back over the Tiber River at night.....
And, of course, I can't end the post without another door knocker. You're welcome! :)
